The Bullying Has Begun: Nicky Hager’s House Raided in Revenge For His Dirty Politics Book

In a move which can only be explained as a personal vendetta against political opponents and a virulent hatred of real journalism and citizens demanding open and transparent  governance the police raided Nicky Hager’s house.

They searched it for 10 hours in the hope of finding anything connecting him to the person responsible for leaking the emails on which Nicky Hager based his book in what can only be described as a fishing expedition and an attempt at intimidation of an independent journalist.

It will only get worse from here on if we don’t condemn this brutal invasion of privacy and the intimidation of a professional independent investigative journalist. What is next? John Key or any other of the scumbags he needs for his dirty work, doesn’t like what people write about them and they get a visit from the police? I haven’t seen them search Cameron Slater’s house for 120 hours when he refused to give up his sources. In fact he was granted Journalist status even if the judge told him to give up his sources and asked him politely to give him the names in a case of clearly personally motivated vindictiveness.

What makes this even more disgusting is that he wasn’t even a suspect in the case but merely a Witness. Is this an example of coercive questioning? What is next slam a journalist in jail until he gives up his source?

Here is Nicky’s Statement from his website:

On Thursday, 2 October, five police arrived at my home with a warrant to search and seize property. I was in Auckland at the time for two days of lectures at the University of Auckland. The police spent over ten hours searching the house and removing property in an attempt to discover the identity of the person who provided information used in my book Dirty Politics.
Soon after the police arrived, the lead detective stated that I was not a suspect in their case, merely a witness. I spoke to him by phone and informed him that he would find no information in the house about my source. Nonetheless, he and his four colleagues seized a large collection of papers and electronic equipment belonging to my family, including computers, drives, phones, CDs, an IPOD and a camera.
I am confident that the police took nothing that will help them with their investigation. Their actions were a fishing expedition, presumably because they have no idea who the source is and hoped they might stumble across information about them.
