Prime Minister John Key will play ‘wing man’ to US president Barack Obama this morning, as the pair push for a Pacific trade pact to be completed.
Key will join Obama at a meeting this morning promoting the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). The talks – with the leaders of six of the 11 TPP members – take place just a few hours before the East Asia Summit launches a new free trade deal – the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
Asia-Pacific power brokers are in the Cambodian capital Phonm Penh for high-level talks, including the EAS and the Association of South East Asian Nationals (ASEAN) conference.
Key held formal talks with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao last night, before meeting Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard for a drink. A glittering gala dinner on the city’s Diamond Island was another opportunity to rub shoulders with other leaders.
