This is interesting. Apparently NATO sent troops to Afghanistan under the condition they would not be used in the war efforts other than as peace keepers. There was a caveat on the freedom to move these troops around. However the war in Afghanistan is not going as planned. It seems the Afghans take exception to their Nation being occupied once again by foreign troops.
So in order to be able to suppress the Afghans NATO needs to be able to use it’s troops more freely.
I wonder when Helen Clarke will announce the need for New Zealand troops to engage in the genocide that is the war in Afghanistan?
ROME, June 26 (Reuters) – NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer met Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Thursday to discuss a possible reduction of restrictions on troop movement in Afghanistan, a NATO spokesman said.
Italy has about 2,700 troops in Afghanistan on peacekeeping and humanitarian duties in the Kabul and Herat regions. They operate under a “caveat” that rules out NATO using them in the more violent south or in front-line combat roles.
But Berlusconi’s new conservative government has signalled that it will be more flexible on rules of engagement for its troops in Afghanistan.
“The Secretary-General welcomed the discussions within Italy to reduce the caveats,” NATO spokesman James Appathurai said.
