Iti’s lawyer calls for UN probe into raids

Tame Iti’s lawyer Annette Sykes has called for a special inquiry by the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Peoples into the Government’s conduct over last month’s police raids.

Mr Iti and Ms Sykes today spoke to the Tuhoe people and reporters at Ruatoki’s Te Rewa Rewa Marae.

Ms Sykes said work was already underway to lay a complaint with the United Nations special rapporteur, Radio New Zealand reported.

She encouraged the Tuhoe people to make statements about the raids to any inquiry.

It had been 28 days since the property of many innocent people was seized, she said.

“When are the computers and the cell phones that have actually made this whole community absolutely impossible to communicate with going to be returned to this community.
