UN torture report decries Taser

21/05/2009

Well, we made it to the top 20 police states so this is not surprising. I reckon next year we’ll have gone up another couple of places.

The United Nations Committee Against Torture says it is “deeply concerned” about New Zealand police adopting the Taser stun gun, as it releases a growing list of worries about this country’s justice system.

The committee has released its fifth report on New Zealand, which covers the period 2003 to 2007.

While it approved some moves the repeal of Section 59 of the Crimes Act, which removed the defence of reasonable force for parents who physically punish their children, there was a longer list of concerns, including worries about the use of Tasers by police.

The severe pain they caused could be seen as a form of torture and could even kill someone.

During the trial period the Taser was mainly used on Maori and youth, which was concerning, the committee said.

It was also concerned about the impartiality of the Independent Police Conduct Authority, which included current and former police officers.

That could hamper investigations into allegations of acts of torture and ill-treatment by the police, the committee said.

Green Party human rights spokesperson Keith Locke said the Government should take note of concerns raised about the use of the Taser.

“New Zealand politicians should listen when a reputable UN committee says this 50,000-volt stun gun inflicts ‘a form of torture’ on its targets,” Mr Locke said.

Yuan edges into place as international trade currency

16/05/2009

This is what Roubini has to say about it

GUANGZHOU, April 16 (Xinhua) — Buyers and sellers at the 105th Canton Fair in south China’s Guangdong Province are no longer restricted to using the U.S. dollar to settle their deals. This year they can also use the yuan, China’s currency.

Last week, the State Council (Cabinet) gave the green light to five major trade cities — Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Dongguan — to use the yuan, also known as Renminbi, as an option to settle international trade deals.

Last December, pilot programs were announced to allow the country’s two economic powerhouses, Guangdong Province and the Yangtze River Delta (including Shanghai), to use the yuan to settle trade deals with the two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao.

“The banks frankly own the place.”Democratic Majority Whip Dick Durbin.

Among those who defeated the homeowners bill are senators Jon Tester (Mont), Max Baucus (Mont), Blanche Lincoln (Ark), Ben Nelson (Neb), Many Landrieu (La), Tim Johnson (SD), and Arlan Specter (Pa).  According to reports, the banksters have poured a half million dollars into Tester’s campaign funds. Baucus has received $3.5 million; Lincoln $1.3 million; Nelson $1.4 million; Landrieu $2 million; Johnson $2.5 million; Specter $4.5 million.

By Paul Craig Roberts

May 14, 2009 Information Clearing House” — -What do you suppose it is like to be elected president of the United States only to find that your power is restricted to the service of powerful interest groups?
A president who does a good job for the ruling interest groups is paid off with remunerative corporate directorships, outrageous speaking fees, and a lucrative book contract.  If he is young when he assumes office, like Bill Clinton and Obama, it means a long life of luxurious leisure.
Fighting the special interests doesn’t pay and doesn’t succeed.  On April 30 the primacy of special over public interests was demonstrated yet again.  The Democrats’ bill to prevent 1.7 million mortgage foreclosures and, thus, preserve $300 billion in home equity by permitting homeowners to renegotiate their mortgages, was defeated in the Senate, despite the 60-vote majority of the Democrats.  The banksters were able to defeat the bill 51 to 45.
These are the same financial gangsters whose unbridled greed and utter irresponsibility have wiped out half of Americans’ retirement savings, sent the economy into a deep hole, and threatened the US dollar’s reserve currency role.  It is difficult to imagine an interest group with a more damaged reputation.  Yet, a majority of “the people’s representatives” voted as the discredited banksters instructed.

Hundreds of billions of public dollars have gone to bail out the banksters, but when some Democrats tried to get the Senate to do a mite for homeowners, the US Senate stuck with the banks.  The Senate’s motto is: “Hundreds of billions for the banksters, not a dime for homeowners.”

Lyrics: Shuttin’ Detroit Down (Replace with any old New Zealand factory town)

Written By: John Rich, John D. Anderson

My daddy taught me that in this country everyone’s the same
You work hard for your dollar and you never pass the blame
When it don’t go your way
Now I see all these big shots whinin’ on my evening news
About how they’re losin’ billions and how it’s up to me and you
To come running to the rescue
Well pardon me if I don’t shed a tear ‘cause they’re selling make believe
And we don’t buy that here

Cause in the real world there shutting Detroit down
While the boss man takes his bonus pay and jets out of town/
And DC’s bailing out the bankers as the farmers auction ground,
Yeah while they’re living it up on Wall Street in that New York City town,
Here in the real world there shuttin’ Detroit down.
They’re shuttin’ Detroit down.”

Well that old man’s been workin’ in that plant most all of his life
Now his pension plan’s been cut in half and he can’t afford to die
And it’s a crying shame, ‘cause he ain’t the one to blame
When I look down and see his caloused hands,
Let me tell you friend it gets me fightin’ mad

Cause in the real world there shutting Detroit down
While the boss man takes his bonus pay and jets out of town/
And DC’s bailing out the bankers as the farmers auction ground,
Yeah while they’re living it up on Wall Street in that New York City town,
Here in the real world there shuttin’ Detroit down.
They’re shuttin’ Detroit down.”

Yeah while there’ living it up on Wall Street in that New York City town
Here in the real world there shuttin’ Detroit down
Here in the real world there shuttin’ Detroit down
In the real world they’re shuttin Detroit down, they’re shuttin’ Detroit down.

Let the countdown begin: Mass murdering bankster “boy” calls ex-bankster MP.

15/05/2009

As I write this I have 196 tabs open and each and every link is worth publishing. This happens a lot these days as the economic collapse accelerates and the banking elites brutal power grab becomes more and more obvious as they no longer bother to hide their goals.

With Secretary of treasure and Ex President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York Timothy Geithner and Google’s CEO attending the unelected power elite Bilderberg meeting in Athens it should be clear who runs this planet. Let me give you a hint; it’s not our legally elected representatives.

Yesterday, “yes, we can” mass murderer Barack “Change” Obama called “Slippery” John “Smiling Assassin” Key and told him he could call him Barrack. Wahey, two Hawaii lovers on a first name basis. So why did Barack (I took the liberty of extending the first name invitation to my humble person) call Johnny boy?

Why did the man elected by the Bilderbergers in Virginia 2008 to spearhead the banking coup in the US and the man who instead of keeping his election promises is betraying the American and world population by extending the Bush policies and is in fact surging all war efforts and mass bombing innocent children and women and nominating Cheney’s attack dog and assassination squad leader to run the Afghan war efforts rather than stop them as he promised, calling the NZ MP?

Oh yeah right, free trade.

The US is bankrupt, foreclosures and poverty are at an all time high and the US produces nothing we need or want and we are talking free trade?

I’ll tell you what Barack calling Johnny: The countdown to New Zealand finally becoming a colony to the Banking elite that rules London and the US. It means Nuclear power and American army bases on these islands.

And that is only twelve of those links.

Welcome to the new world order.

Revealed: The secret report that shows how the Nazis planned a Fourth Reich …in the EU

13/05/2009

The paper is aged and fragile, the typewritten letters slowly fading. But US Military Intelligence report EW-Pa 128 is as chilling now as the day it was written in November 1944.

The document, also known as the Red House Report, is a detailed account of a secret meeting at the Maison Rouge Hotel in Strasbourg on August 10, 1944. There, Nazi officials ordered an elite group of German industrialists to plan for Germany’s post-war recovery, prepare for the Nazis’ return to power and work for a ‘strong German empire’. In other words: the Fourth Reich.

Heinrich Himmler with Max Faust, engineer with I. G. Farben

Plotters: SS chief Heinrich Himmler with Max Faust, engineer with Nazi-backed company I. G. Farben

The three-page, closely typed report, marked ‘Secret’, copied to British officials and sent by air pouch to Cordell Hull, the US Secretary of State, detailed how the industrialists were to work with the Nazi Party to rebuild Germany’s economy by sending money through Switzerland.

They would set up a network of secret front companies abroad. They would wait until conditions were right. And then they would take over Germany again.

The industrialists included representatives of Volkswagen, Krupp and Messerschmitt. Officials from the Navy and Ministry of Armaments were also at the meeting and, with incredible foresight, they decided together that the Fourth German Reich, unlike its predecessor, would be an economic rather than a military empire – but not just German.

Precipitation Enhancement: Active Weather Modification Campaigns chemtrails

Robert Allison
Prison Planet.com
Tuesday, May 12, 2009

New revelations have shed more light on weather modification programs, also referred to as geo-engineering, commonly called chem-trails. The “new” terminology, ‘Precipitation Enhancement‘, has revealed government and governmental contractors have been dispersing chemicals into the atmosphere on a regular basis for decades, dating back to the 1950’s. This article is an attempt to remove the conspiracy theory label that has been attached to very real man-made phenomenon of weather modification.

Precipitation Enhancement programs are ongoing in Texas, California, Australia, China, Iran, and many other locations worldwide. The following programs are documented, and the websites below list the flight missions over Central and South Texas:

There are currently at least 10 precipitation programs underway in Texas, covering more than 50 million acres, under the Edwards Aquifer Authority since 1999. California has cloud seeding programs underway under the authority of Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E).

Water management is the supposed justification for many of these programs, but upon further investigation, flash flooding and severe thunderstorms are typical results. This link takes you to a summary of some of the missions over South and Central Texas, and if you open the first two Daily Reports (PDFs), flash floods, and severe storms the precipitation enhancement missions caused are documented. As a side note, flood insurance in Texas is hard to obtain.

A defence force of Terminators is almost here

13/05/2009

And this is what WAtoday has to say about the new terminator age we are entering.

The white paper ignores the most important development in weaponry.

THIS was a daunting task that faced the crafters of the defence white paper, which lays out a vision of an Australian military “Force 2030″. As an American reading from afar, I find myself in great agreement with its perspective of a dynamic world that features a diverse array of both real and potential threats. It also carries a striking underlying message of an emerging geopolitical reality, that Asia is becoming a more dangerous neighbourhood, one in which America and Australia may well be leaning on each other more than ever.

Trying to figure out the political and economic trends that will shape this world of tomorrow makes defence policy planning difficult enough. But one of the challenges in security studies, and one that the white paper also suffers from, is the blinkers we often put on when it comes to technological trends.

An amazing revolution is ongoing around us, especially in war. The US military went into Iraq in 2003 with a handful of unmanned planes. There are now more than 7000 robotic drones in its inventory. In 2003, the invasion force had no ground robotics. Today there are roughly 12,000 on the ground. And the latest models of our robots give new meaning to the technology industry term “killer application”, as they now come with a lethal armoury of missiles, rockets, and machine-guns.

Bank of England braced for third wave of financial crisis

13/05/2009

Surprise £50bn cash injection is attempt to avert new phase of credit crunch.

The Bank of England is concerned that the UK’s banking system is heading for a third wave of crisis that could snuff out fragile signs of recovery in the economy.

On Thursday the Bank surprised the City by announcing that it would pump an extra £50bn of new money into the economy despite recent stockmarket rallies.

Now the Guardian has learned that this increase in quantitative easing was driven by fears in Threadneedle Street that the credit crunch is still sucking the life out of the British economy and the banking sector remains in deep trouble.

The new mood of caution chimes with comments from business leaders yesterday, who warned that apparent green shoots in the economy had shallow roots.

Drones: America’s New Air Force

13/05/2009

What does that mean for you and me? Let me give you a hint. Imagine just like Iceland that we have something the Global elite wants and we naive as we are tell them to shove it, first there will be an economic collapse just like in Iceland and if we still don’t budge there will be big aircraft carriers outside of our territorial waters and drones flying in and bombing the shit out of Wellington and Auckland. Big deal if they loose a few. They are dirt cheap compared to expensive human flown jets and can be flown by any gamer sitting in his little computer room at mum and dads. Feeling saver already?

Every so often in the history of war, a new weapon comes along that fundamentally rewrites the rules of battle. This is a story about a revolution in unmanned aviation that is doing just that.
Most people know them as drones; the Air Force calls them “unmanned aerial vehicles.” And right now, there are dozens of them in the skies over Iraq and Afghanistan, hunting down insurgents, every minute of every day.

They’ve become one of the most important planes in the United States Air Force – and yet, the pilot is nowhere near the aircraft or the battlefield. They are controlled by remote control, from thousands of miles away.

Many of the details of this weapons program are classified, but our 60 Minutes team was given secret clearance and unprecedented access to bring you this story.

Forty-five miles north of Las Vegas, on the edge of the Mojave desert, is Creech Air Force base. It is home to the only wing in the Air Force where none of the pilots ever leave the ground.

Colonel Chris Chambliss was one of the top F-16 fighter pilots in the Air Force, a member of the legendary Thunderbirds. Now the unit he commands has no jets – just pilotless planes known as the Reaper and the Predator.

Creech is the first base in Air Force history that exclusively flies unmanned aircraft.

U.S. Troops Die For Rapists

12/05/2009

By Ted Rall

May 08, 2009 “Information Clearing House” — LOS ANGELES–American soldiers serving in Vietnam wondered what they were fighting for. U.S. troops in Afghanistan don’t have that problem. They know exactly what they’re fighting for: rapists.

After President Obama’s coming “Afghan surge” there will be 72,000 soldiers in Afghanistan. Their primary mission is to prevent Afghans from overthrowing the unpopular regime of Hamid Karzai, the former oil consultant installed by George W. Bush when the U.S. occupation began nearly eight years ago.

America’s media repeatedly claimed that Afghan women would be better off under the U.S.-supported Northern Alliance puppet government headed by Karzai than under the Taliban. But when I went to Afghanistan and asked women what they thought, they had a different story. The defeat of the Taliban brought about the collapse of law and order, making life even more dangerous, especially for women. “Under the Taliban,” a woman told me, “I watched rapists being executed. Now I see them in the government.”

The Afghan women’s rights group RAWA has repeatedly told anyone willing to listen that there hasn’t been much improvement for women and girls since the U.S. occupation began in 2001. But no one–least of all left-of-center Americans eager to embrace the Afghan war–has wanted to hear what they had to say. “Most women still wear the all-encompassing burqa through fear of attack and social pressure, a third of women in Kabul do not leave the house, forbidden from doing so by the male members of the family, and it is still almost impossible for women to get a divorce,” reported The Sunday Herald in 2005.

US accused of illegal white phosphorus attack in Afghanistan

12/05/2009

United States forces in Afghanistan are accused of illegally deploying white phosphorus against civilians following a firefight with Taliban militants, according to published reports.

White phosphorus is legal to use on a battlefield but illegal to deploy for any reason other than illumination. The chemical ignites on contact with the air. Human rights groups said using the substance in populated, civilian areas is a war crime, but the United States is not a signatory to any treaty which entirely bans its use.

Chinese Economy Seems to be Growing

12/05/2009

One of the reasons people believe the “worst is behind us” is because the Chinese economy seems to be growing.

This from the Financial Times:

“Perhaps more than any major economy, China is showing signs of improvement, writes Geoff Dyer. Indicators suggest that the economy began to recover in March with industrial production rising 8.3 per cent from 2.8 per cent in January-February.

“But could it all be a bit of false hope? Could we, in fact, be misinterpreting a temporary stimulus-induced economic pick-me-up as an actual sustainable recovery?”

China says it is growing. But if it were really growing it would be using more fuel and more electricity. Instead, industrial demand for gasoil, used by factories and commercial plants, fell 12.6% in the first quarter.

Our old friend Sean Corrigan, chief investment strategist over at Diapason Commodities, also points out that electricity generation has been going down too. The last seven months’ power output has been 8.5% below that of a year ago.

Pakistani president: Osama bin Laden is dead

11/05/2009

Two weeks ago, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zadari suggested that Osama bin Laden might be dead, saying that U.S. and Pakistani intelligence agencies had been unable to detect any sign of the world’s most wanted man since an audio recording of his voice was released in March.

Sunday morning, Zadari went further: “I don’t think he’s alive,” the president told NBC’s David Gregory. “I have a strong feeling and reason to believe that.” Zadari continued: “I have asked my counterparts in the American intelligence services and they haven’t heard [from] him in seven years.”

The CIA has not confirmed that the voice purporting to be bin Laden in the March recording was in fact bin Laden. U.S. officials have claimed that bin Laden could be hiding in the mountainous region along the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Just before saying that he believes bin Laden is dead, Zadari told Gregory that America has “been looking [in Afghanistan] for eight years… You lost him in Torah Borah, I didn’t.”

(CNN) — Nearly 400 people were killed overnight Saturday by government shelling in what is supposed to be a “no-fire” zone of Sri Lanka, a humanitarian worker in the area told CNN on Sunday.

A photo supplied by a humanitarian group on Sunday shows civilians allegedly injured in government shelling.

Most of the roughly 378 dead are civilians, and another 1,200 were wounded, the aid worker said.

Video sent to CNN by the pro-Tamil rebel pressure group ACT Now appeared to show dead and wounded civilians. The group says the video was taken Sunday in the “no-fire” zone. Another humanitarian group also supplied photos of casualties to CNN.

CNN cannot confirm the authenticity of either the video or the photos. CNN is not naming the humanitarian sources in the conflict zone to protect their safety.

The government denies the assertion it shelled the “no-fire” zone, saying it is the Tamil Tiger rebels who have been killing civilians.

Police Terror Stops Occur Every Three Minutes In London

07/05/2009

Some 10 years ago I and my husband visited London. We were staying with friends and we decided to take a sight seeing trip in the evening. We drove our old 2CV to the city and parked close to the St. Pauls cathedral which like many of the most beautiful buildings throughout Europe was lit beautifully and we proceeded to walk around the cathedral. We were discussing the building and having a generally grand old touristy time when a City (seperate from the rest of London) police car drove up to us and two police officers stepped out. They asked us what we were doing and slightly taken aback we told them that we were admiring the Cathedral. Well, clearly that was not good enough and we were ordered to identify ourselves, which we did, get back to our car and leave the city. Were we Irish or known to the police as activists?

No, we were Dutch and Kiwi on a short visit to English friends both of whom were legally employed middle class people on a tourist sightseeing trip.

It was my first and so far only confrontation with a camera guarded police state. The police followed u until we had left the city. Very scary and unnerving. Now this happens to people every three minutes in the entirety of London. Not to mention the rest of England.

Leaked Agenda: Bilderberg Group Plans Economic Depression

07/05/2009

On the eve of the 2009 Bilderberg Group conference, which is due to be held May 14-17 at the 5 star Nafsika Astir Palace Hotel in Vouliagmeni, Greece, investigative reporter Daniel Estulin has uncovered shocking details of what the elitists plan to do with the economy over the course of the next year.

The Bilderberg Group meeting is an annual confab of around 150 of the world’s most influential powerbrokers in government, industry, banking, media, academia and the military-industrial complex. The secretive group operates under “Chatham House rules,” meaning that no details of what is discussed can ever be leaked to the media, despite editors of the world’s biggest newspapers, the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Financial Times, being present at the meeting.

According to Estulin’s sources, which have been proven highly accurate in the past, Bilderberg is divided on whether to put into motion, “Either a prolonged, agonizing depression that dooms the world to decades of stagnation, decline and poverty … or an intense-but-shorter depression that paves the way for a new sustainable economic world order, with less sovereignty but more efficiency.”

The information takes on added weight when one considers the fact that Estulin’s previous economic forecasts, which were based on leaks from the same sources, have proven deadly accurate. Estulin correctly predicted the housing crash and the 2008 financial meltdown as a result of what his sources inside Bilderberg told him the elite were planning based on what was said at their 2006 meeting in Canada and the 2007 conference in Turkey.

New law bans gang patches in public

07/05/2009

I wholeheartedly agree. The outward means to identify a member of a gang or a criminal group one belongs to should be banned.

I suggest we start with the most recognisable of all, the one which most males emulate if they want to “get ahead” in the world or if they want to pretend to be a successful and accepted member of our ruling elite , the uniform of the biggest robber class in the world: The suit our criminal, corrupt and extreme leaders wear and whom all of us are slowly learning to recognise for what they truly are: Modern day robber barons, feudal lords, terrorist leaders. Let me give you a few examples.

Who Will Stop the AIPAC Jews Before it is Too Late?

07/05/2009

Medea Benjamin, of Jewish descent, is one of the co-founders of Code Pink.

While I was being tackled by security guards at Washington’s Convention Center during the AIPAC conference for unfurling a banner that asked “What about Gaza?,” my heart was aching. I wasn’t bothered so much by the burly guards who were yanking my arms behind by back and dragging me-along with 5 other CODEPINK members-out of the hall. They were doing their job.

What made my heart ache was the hatred I felt from the AIPAC staff who tore up the banner and slammed their hands across my mouth as I tried to yell out: “What about Gaza? What about the children?”

“Shut the f— up. Shut the f— up.” one staffer yelled, red-faced and sweating as he ran beside me. “This is not the place to be saying that shit. Get the f— out of here.”

What makes my heart ache is thinking about the traumatized children I met on my recent trip to Gaza, and how their suffering is denied by the 6,000 AIPAC conventioneers who are living in a bubble-a bubble where Israel is the victim and all critics are anti-Semitic, terrorist lovers or, as in my case, self-hating Jews.

I found it fascinating that AIPAC’s executive director Howard Kohr opened the conference admitting that there was now a huge, international campaign against the policies of Israel. He painted a picture of 30,000 people marching in Spain, Italian trade unionists calling for a boycott of Israeli products, the UN Human Rights Council passing 26 resolutions condemning Israel, an Israeli Apartheid Week that is building a global boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign.

What has become clear over the eight and a half years this war has lasted is that:

  • We did not go there to catch Osama bin Laden.
  • We did not go there to help the Afghanis
  • We did not go there to beat the extremist and terroristic Taliban. In fact the Taliban are being financed by the US.
  • We did not go there to liberate the women of Afghanistan
  • We did not go there to rebuild the country

What is becoming more and more evident is that we went there to:

  • Surround Russia and China
  • Get our hands on the Afghani resources (Bamiyan is by the way the very province NZ troops are stationed in.)
  • Destroy the Afghani culture
  • Rebuild the opium trade which had been destroyed by the Taliban

Watch the video:

And while you’re at it spread the video around. New Zealand has no business in Afghanistan.

California Students’ Call for Condi War Crimes Probe

07/05/2009

During the Vietnam War, Stanford students succeeded in banning secret military research from campus. Last weekend, 150 activist alumni and present Stanford students targeted Condoleezza Rice for authorizing torture and misleading Americans into the illegal Iraq War.

Veterans of the Stanford anti-Vietnam War movement had gathered for a 40th anniversary reunion during the weekend. The gathering featured panels on foreign policy, the economy, political and social movements, science and technology, media, energy and the environment, and strategies for aging activists.

On Sunday, surrounded by alumni and students, Lenny Siegel and I nailed a petition to the University President’s office door. The petition, circulated by Stanford Say No to War, reads:

“We the undersigned students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other concerned members of the Stanford community, believe that high officials of the U.S. Government, including our former Provost, current Political Science Professor, and Hoover Institution Senior Fellow, Condoleezza Rice, should be held accountable for any serious violations of the Law (included ratified treaties, statutes, and/or the U.S. Constitution) through investigation and, if the facts warrant, prosecution, by appropriate legal authorities.”

Prison company to pay $42.5 million in beating death

06/05/2009

Well that only took eight years. I’m really looking forward to the same shit happening here. Not!

In a searing opinion, the 13th Court of Appeals has upheld $42.5 million in punitive damages against a private prison operator for the “horrific and gruesome death” of inmate Gregorio De La Rosa Jr. in 2001.

De La Rosa was beaten to death by two other inmates at a 1,000-bed facility in Raymondville while guards and supervisors looked on, according to trial testimony three years ago.

The trial judge concluded that prison officials, including co-defendant David Forrest, the prison warden, had destroyed or lied about critical evidence, including a videotape of the fatal beating.

When De La Rosa died, he had only four days left to serve on a six-month sentence for a minor drug offense.

The Torturer’s Apprentice

06/05/2009

Australia’s role in the American Inquisition. The revelations of a once secret 2006 report by the International Committee of the Red Cross on the use of torture and “cruel, inhuman, or degrading punishment” on prisoners at Guantánamo and secret CIA jails came as a shock to many. This is odd, because anyone with a keyboard, modem and half a brain, quickly discovered that in the panicky aftermath of 9/11, the West had forged a pact with the Devil. It was not only Dick Cheney who felt the call of the dark side – it was virtually the entire governing class of America, Britain and Australia. Yes, even Australia, a former penal colony that started life as Britain’s Guantanamo. By RICHARD NEVILLE. You might think this grim past would sharpen the desire of our institutions to root out injustice and comfort the afflicted. Well, we go through the motions. Australia signed the Convention against Torture (CAT) and, unlike the US, ratified it. But now we have trashed it. How come? Let’s take a swift trip into the heart of darkness.

Maori leaders called to talks after Key veto

06/05/2009

“Down boy, heel”, is what John Key has apparently told Pita Sharples when he announced he wanted to travel to Fiji as part of the Maori delegation. While he may legally have the right to do so it only goes to show how far up John Key’s ass the Maori Party leadership has managed to wedge themselves.

Prime Minister John Key was talking to Maori Party co-leaders last night to patch up a strain in the relationship after he bluntly vetoed Pita Sharples’ wish to travel to Fiji as part of a Maori delegation.

Mr Key yesterday exercised his prime ministerial veto against Dr Sharples’ plans to visit Fiji – a change of mind from Sunday when he said Dr Sharples could go in a personal capacity, or as leader of the Maori Party.

Maori Party MP Hone Harawira is now likely to go instead and the delegation will be led by the party’s president Whatarangi Winiata.

Dr Sharples and Tariana Turia said last night they accepted the Prime Minister had the right to make the decision and they would abide by it.

However, Mrs Turia said it did not mean the party agreed with it.

‘What I think is he’s asserting his right as Prime Minister to say yes or no. He does have the right to do that. I don’t have to agree with it, but I do accept it.”
