Obama’s Inauguration, Sponsored by the Few, the Wealthy

20/01/2009

Just in case you think that anything is going to change under Obama, the selected puppet of the New World Order, think again. it was the bailed out bankers and the military industrial government complex which shouted Obama’s 170 million inauguration party and his advisors read like a who’s who of the Zionist/US military industrial complex.

Israel recruits ‘army of bloggers’ to combat anti-Zionist Web sites

19/01/2009

Israel lost the media war  aroung their genocidal attack on Gaza costing over a 1300 people, mostly women and children their lives, mutilating wounding thousands of others  and causing untold anguish and desolation to hundreds of thousands of human being soley because they were born in the wrong place at the worn time and in the wrong skin.

Let’s make sure they loose this one too. I for one can’t wait until they discover my site. Bring it on I say.

Let me start with the first strike. I hate the murderous, racist Zionist regime. I’m with Ahmadin Najad, Narturai Carta, Jews against Zionism, Strawberry Tree owner Shayne Kavanagh and Mustafa Tekinkaya and all the other courageous people around the world who are standing up too and speaking out against Israel’s murderous policies.

————————-

The Immigrant Absorption Ministry announced on Sunday it was setting up an “army of bloggers,” to be made up of Israelis who speak a second language, to represent Israel in “anti-Zionist blogs” in English, French, Spanish and German.

The program’s first volunteer was Sandrine Pitousi, 31, from Kfar Maimon, situated five kilometers from Gaza. “I heard about the project over the radio and decided to join because I’m living in the middle of the conflict,” she said.

Before hanging up the phone prematurely following a Color Red rocket alert, Pitousi, who immigrated to Israel from France in 1993, said she had some experience with public relations from managing a production company.

Trade war fears as subsidies restored

19/01/2009

So much for john key telling the rest of the world that we should all pull together and keep on trading. I’m sure they listened. Ooh, oops they put their own populations first. I guess that means that our luxury products, Diary, meet and wood are going to be hard to sell.

And Phil, it wasn’t the people who caused the “Great” depression it was the banksers. Yep, right in one; John Key and his ilk. How’s that change going for ya, big boy. The people only did what they should do; Act prudently and save. Not a good thing for a system based on ever groing debt but than a system based on ever groeing debt is not a good thing for us nor this planet.

European export subsidies are stirring fears of a trade war with echoes of the 1930s protectionism that sparked the Great Depression.

The European Union this week re-introduces so called “export refunds” for butter, cheese, whole and skimmed milk powder that had been suspended since June 2007.

Federated Farmers economics and commerce spokesperson Philip York said the move by the EU could create tit-for-tat actions on both sides of the Atlantic. In an agricultural trade war New Zealand would be a big loser.

“People need to be reminded that the 1929 sharemarket crash didn’t directly create the Great Depression but politicians did,” York said.

Gazans dig bodies from rubble as cease-fire begins

19/01/2009

For Palestinians searching the rubble of this devastated refugee camp, the mounds of concrete and metal hid all they desperately wanted and needed: the bodies of dead relatives, belongings and — bitterly — scraps of bombs now valuable enough to sell as recycled aluminium.
Destruction was everywhere on Sunday, in churned up farmland, dangling electricity poles, charred bodies of cars abandoned on pulverized roads, and broken pipes overflowing with sewage. The stench of rotting corpses, both human and animal, hung in the air.

Hamas Leader Declares Victory in Gaza War

19/01/2009

Not long after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert declared victory in their 22-day long attack on the Gaza Strip, Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh declared victory on behalf of the Hamas government.

The enemy has failed to achieve its goals,” Haniyeh insisted. He also declared the war, which killed over 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis (At least four of which were killed by friendly fire) a “popular victory” for the Palestinians.

‘We won’ says Olmert as Israel declares ceasefire

19/01/2009

Half-concealing a smile of self-satisfaction as he declared a unilateral ceasefire, the Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert has assured Israelis that “we won.” Claiming that the Israeli army had obtained all its objectives, he said that Hamas was “surprised and badly beaten.”

Israel has certainly shown its military superiority in the 22 days since 90 Israeli planes opened hostilities on 27 December when they launched a surprise attack on 100 targets in the Gaza Strip. In the eyes of many Israelis the Gaza War has restored Israel’s ability to deter its enemies, a deterrence that had been degraded by its failure to crush Hezbullah in Lebanon in 2006.

But the ability of Israel’s heavy tanks, artillery and air force to win any clash with several thousand lightly armed Hamas fighters was never in doubt. Israel may in the long term achieve some success in getting weapons smuggling from Egypt into Gaza more tightly monitored. But Hamas remains in almost full control of the Gaza Strip and the Israeli government says it intends to withdraw from those bits of territory which it has reoccupied.

More Americans Joining Military as Jobs Dwindle

19/01/2009

Benefit to the ruling elite and the military industrial complex? Collapse an economy, gain an army.

As the number of jobs across the nation dwindles, more Americans are joining the military, lured by a steady paycheck, benefits and training.

The last fiscal year was a banner one for the military, with all active-duty and reserve forces meeting or exceeding their recruitment goals for the first time since 2004, the year that violence in Iraq intensified drastically, Pentagon officials said.

THE GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS — Michel Chossudovsky 1-1-2009, Montreal

18/01/2009

While Key had ridden reasonably comfortably through the monetary crises
of the 90s – the Russian debt crisis, the Asian crisis and dot com
crisis – many did not. Merrills suffered heavy losses and Key, as the
surviving manager had the task of sacking hundreds of staff. As he told
Metro magazine, he earned himself the title of “smiling assassin”
during the sacking spree. Eugene Bingham, 19 July 2008, New Zealand Herald.

“I had a whole lot of people working for me who were at the cutting
edge of delivering quite complex and new and innovative products. They
tended to either be a new product or into a new market, usually the
emerging markets, Russia, Brazil, Argentina. I wasn’t the guy sitting
there dreaming it all up, but I was the guy who was responsible for
those people.” John Key, 19 july 2008, New Zealand Herald.

John Key’s positions with Merrill Lynch from 1995 until March 2001: Global head for foreign exchange, European head of the department for Bonds and Derivatives and managing director of Debt and internet trading.

John Key’s position with the Federal Reserve of New York: One of only four upon invitation advisors only on the foreign exchange committee from the November 1999 until March 2001.

I started out with: I give you Michel Chossudovsky, Professor in Economics and the director of Global research.

But now I’ve had the chance to actually listen to the whole speech and OMG if you do anything today let it be that you watch this speech. Especially pay attention about Prof. Chossudovsky’s portrail of the Asian Crisis, Brazilian Crisis and the Russian crisis.

Patients flee as flames engulf Gaza hospital: medics

17/01/2009

More horror.

Desperate patients tried to flee a hospital in Gaza City this morning as it became engulfed in flames after being earlier set on fire by an Israeli tank shell, medics and witnesses said.

In scenes of utter panic, patients who had been wounded in the ongoing war in the territory could be seen trying to struggle from their beds, an AFP photographer at the scene said.

At least three prematurely-born babies were being wheeled out of the hospital in their incubators along with three patients who had been on life-support machines.

The sound of Israeli gunfire could also be heard in the neighbourhood where Al-Quds hospital is situated.

Palestinian doctor who gave war dispatches to Israeli TV reports 3 daughters’ deaths

17/01/2009

You tell me, is this going to diminish the influence of the legally elected Hamas party in Gaza? No, I didn’t think so.

And contrary to what you might think, Muslim fathers love their daughters with the same passion as western fathers.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Palestinian doctor provided Israeli TV viewers with regular updates on Gaza fighting’s human toll. But Friday’s report was different — with sobs he told how his three daughters and a niece were killed by an Israeli shell.

“I want to know why my daughters were harmed,” Ezzeldeen Abu al-Aish said on Channel 10. “This should haunt (Israeli Ehud Prime Minister) Olmert his entire life.”

Throughout the 21-day war, Abu al-Aish has brought accounts of war’s tragedy to Israeli living rooms, making him for many the voice of Palestinian suffering.

During the broadcasts, Abu al-Aish also often spoke of his fears for his eight children as Israeli shells punished not only the Hamas militants they were targeting but civilians who live in the crowded enclave. His wife reportedly died recently of cancer.

When Channel 10 called him on Friday, he answered his cell phone crying that his house in the northern Gaza strip town of Jebalia had been hit by Israeli shells and his daughters killed. Eighteen members of his extended family were in the house at the time.

Israel looking to ignite new war: Lebanon

17/01/2009

Israel’s Mossad has been known to organise false flag operations in order to garner sympathy for attacks on Palestinians and Lebanon.

Lebanon rejects Hezbollah involvement in a recent rocket attack on Israel, suggesting that the launch may have been a ploy by Tel Aviv.

In a ceremony in the southern Lebanese city of Nabatiyeh, Labor Minister Mohammed Fneish said Lebanon was not involved in the recent rocket attacks on Israel and denied having any further information regarding the incident.

“It is not on us to safeguard Israeli security or find the perpetrators. UNIFIL forces must find and apprehend the rocket launchers,” Fneish added.

Several rockets were fired across the Lebanese border and into Israel on Wednesday; Tel Aviv responded by firing a barrage of rockets into southern Lebanon.

Systemic Economic Crisis: The Sequence of Global Insolvency Begins

17/01/2009

In 2007, LEAP/E2020 announced that US banks and consumers were both insolvent. More than a year ago, our team estimated that USD 10,000-billion worth in « ghost-assets » would vanish in the crisis. Both announcements came in complete opposition with the common opinion of that time; however they proved perfectly justified in the months after. In the same line, LEAP/E2020 today estimates that a new sequence of the fourth phase (so-called « decanting phase ») of the unfolding global systemic crisis has began: the sequence of global insolvency.

The heavy consequences conveyed by the global insolvency are anticipated in this GEAB N°31, of which this announcement presents an excerpt meant to put clearly what is at stake in this new sequence of the crisis. GEAB N°31 also details the 20 “ups and downs” of the year 2009 according to the LEAP/E2020 team : fifteen upward trends and fourteen downward trends, as many decision- abnd analysis-support instruments for all those worried or intrigued by the coming year.

Contrary to what political leaders and their central bankers seem to believe worldwide, the problem of liquidity that they are striving to solve by means of historic interest rate drops and unlimited money creation, is not a cause but a consequence of the current crisis. It is in fact a problem of solvency which is digging « black holes » where liquidities disappear, whether we call these holes bank balance sheets (1), household debt (2), corporate bankruptcies or public deficits. In consideration of the fact that a conservative estimation of these “ghost-assets” reaches already USD 30,000-billion (3), our team considers that the world is now facing a situation of general insolvency affecting in the first place the most indebted countries and organizations (public or private) and/or those depending most on financial services.

Sept. 11 death toll grows after cancer death

17/01/2009

This of course does not appear in the mainstream media in the US. To learn about this you have to go to France.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A 45-year-old man who died of cancer due to breathing in toxic dust following the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 has become the latest addition to the attacks’ overall toll.

Leon Bernard Heyward, 45, died on October 18, 2008 from “lymphoma complicating sarcoidosis,” bringing the overall death toll from the attacks to 2,752, the New York City medical examiner’s office said.

Heyward’s is the second name to be added to the list in the years following the attacks. Officials in May 2007 also linked the death of Felicia Dunn-Jones five years earlier to dust she inhaled at the World Trade Center site.

The cause of death for all the official victims of the attacks is homicide, said medical examiner’s spokeswoman Ellen Borakove.

Why Isn’t This News? U.S. Rabbis Call for Gaza Cease-Fire

17/01/2009

They are not the only ones calling for the horror in Gaza to stop. Israeli peace activists and British leading Jews also call for  a ceasefire .

Today on page 17 of the NY Times, a group of prominent liberal rabbis and other religious and cultural leaders called for a cease-fire in Gaza. They were backed by over 2,800 American citizens. Because they could not get their opinion presented in the major media they had to buy this full page ad. Haaretz considered it news. So far no U.S. media have considered it news. Why not? This is a great puzzle to me. I hope you will consider it news and will pass the ad around, sign it, even contribute if you can so it can be put in more places.

This is a story about Gaza but also about the way that liberal Jewish voices (shared by many other interfaith and secular people) are being shut out of the US media. No American rabbi has a longer or more substantial track record as a liberal on Israel/Palestine than Rabbi Michael Lerner, who convened the group and raised the money for the ad from 1200 people, mostly in small donations (he started Tikkun magazine 23 years ago as a counter to Commentary and the Jewish right), but he could not get his views into any oped pages of major newspapers despite valiant efforts since the Gaza invasion. He did however have this in the Times of London.

Fatal shooting at West Bank protest

17/01/2009

A Palestinian has been shot dead and several others wounded after Israeli security forces opened fire during a protest in the West Bank against Israel’s war in Gaza.

The man died after being shot in the head when clashes broke in the West Bank town of Hebron on Friday, medics and witnesses said.

Israeli soldiers had opened fire with live ammunition and rubber bullets after youths throwing stones had apparently tried to march towards the Israeli-controlled area of the city, witnesses said.

Several other Palestinians were reportedly wounded in the clashes, which came after Hamas called earlier in the week for a “day of wrath” on Friday in response to Israeli offensive in Gaza.

What you should know about Israels “Colonies”.

Anna Baltzer is a Jewish American lady and I mean that in the most respectful way.
She is a Jewish American Columbia graduate, Fulbright scholar, and volunteer with the International Women’s Peace Service. She lived and worked in the West Bank to discover the realities of daily life for Palestinians under the occupation and contrary to the Pakeha Kiwi belief that all Arabs are crazy murderous thugs, did not get killed immediately by rabid Muslim fundamentalists but instead was welcomed and treated like a friend. This is what she has to tell us:

Bush’s Final Approval Rating: 22 Percent

17/01/2009

The majority of Pakeha New Zealanders of course still think that the sun shines out of Bushes ass and the war in Afghanistan is not genocide but helping the under developed backward “rag heads” but it’s nice to know that we, the ones who know that Bush is a psychopathic war criminal, are in the majority. It’ s official;  Bush and Cheney leave office as the most unpopular President and Vice president ever. Bush’s approval rate is 22 % and Cheney’s is 13%. Bush is now officially more unpopular that Nixon. You go Americans, it’s good to know that your still with us; the human race. that’s apart form the 5% brainless dimwits who think that Bush was the best president ever.

On Iraq, the public was behind Mr. Bush when the U.S. began military action nearly six years ago. In April 2003, a majority approved of the president’s action and 79 percent of Americans approved of the way Mr. Bush was handling the situation in Iraq – his highest rating ever on this question.

As the war continued and the U.S. casualties increased, public support began to wane. A year after the war began, 49 percent of Americans approved of the president’s handling of the war. In December 2006, only 21 percent approved of Mr. Bush’s handling of the situation in Iraq – his lowest rating ever on this issue.

The last time a majority of Americans approved of the president’s handling of the Iraq war was immediately after the capture of Saddam Hussein in December 2003.

Currently, 25 percent approve and 71 percent disapprove.

For Wind Turbine Manufacturers, the Layoffs Begin

17/01/2009
FactoryPresident-elect Obama met on Friday with workers at a factory in Ohio that manufactures wind turbine parts. (Photo: Getty Images)

President-elect Barack Obama will spend part of today touring a factory near Cleveland that makes parts for wind turbines — an example of the “green jobs” that he hopes to promote in the stimulus package.

But some of those jobs in the wind industry are becoming casualties of the economic slump. North Dakota-based D.M.I. Industries, which manufactures turbine towers, is laying off 20 percent of its workers across three plants — in Tulsa, Okla.; Stevensville, Ontario; and West Fargo, N.D.

The news comes barely six months after the company announced expansion plans that would make it the “largest wind tower manufacturer in North America.”

“Quite frankly, I was shocked,” the mayor of West Fargo, Rich Mattern, told The Associated Press earlier this month. “I thought they were bulletproof. I never guessed that they would be in trouble.”

The Grandchildren 0f Holocaust Survivors from WWII are doing to the Palestinians exactly what was done to them by Nazi Germany

Thank you John Bursill for sending me this and thank you for your tireless effort in standing beside me and all those other beautiful peace and 911 truth activists in our struggle for justice.

Just in case you were wondering what a concentration camp looks like, here’s a hint: you don’t have to travel back in time, all you have to do is travel to Gaza.

Now not everybody has that kind of money so here’s a comparison in Photo’s of that time and now.

I grew up with these photo’s and was told this would never happen again when I was a child but here we are looking on while Israel is perpetrating on the Palestinians what was perpetrated on them and through the mass media’s sanitised version of the horrific reality in Gaza we, like the Gouls on Parash Hill and the inhabitants of Lublin who lived only three kilometres away from the Majdanek concentration camp in WWII, are living in denial and letting the Zionist regime get away with war crimes the likes of which we haven’t seen since WWII. As I said before I will not allow  the Kiwi population to walk away from making a stand by being able to say: Wir haben es nicht gewusst.

Please send this post to everyone you know in New Zealand. let’s make this country that did know and demanded that their government did take a stand. let’s make sure we will not be reminded as the population of Lublin who heard the gunshots and saw and smelled the smoke form the chimneys of Majdanek and still, after five years of horror could say: Wir haben es night gewusst.

Diving with sharks

17/01/2009

I’ve been diving for many years and the only close ups with sharks I’ve had was when we caught a baby shark in Raglan and a hammerhead baby in the Coromandel (we let them go of course). That and the fin of an approximately 2 meter long shark (blue probably) sticking up from the water behind the boat we where fishing from after a dive. The shark clearly had a thing for the two seagulls swimming behind the boat trying to catch some of our bait.

By the way is it just me or is this shark looking positively dippy?

Blue shark looking very happy

Blue shark looking very happy

Gisborne shark chaser Boyd McGregor has just one piece of advice if you are “lucky enough” to come across a shark while out at sea.

“My advice is just enjoy the experience. … even if a shark attacks you, you’re probably not going to know about it anyway,” says Boyd.

After hearing one of Boyd’s fishing tales about how a shark nearly ate his 120hp outboard motor, we arrive at a spot in the vast Bay of Plenty about 25km off the Whakatane coastline.

It’s a serene place which ticks all the boxes for shark viewing. A change in water colour from greenish to blue shows where the shark’s food supply of albacore tuna is likely to run, and birds – which chase the fish – and the reef structures provide the clues Boyd and first mate Warren Veall seek.

UN headquarters in Gaza hit by Israeli ‘white phosphorus’ shells

17/01/2009

The main UN compound in Gaza was left in flames today after being struck by Israeli artillery fire, and a spokesman said that the building had been hit by shells containing the incendiary agent white phosphorus.

The attack on the headquarters of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) came as Ban Ki Moon, the UN Secretary-General, arrived in Israel on a peace mission and plunged Israel’s relations with the world body to a new low.

Mr Ban expressed his “strong protest and outrage” at the shelling and demanded an investigation, only to be told by apologetic Israeli leaders that their forces had been returning fire from within the UN compound.

Ahmadinejad demands trial of Israeli leaders

17/01/2009

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urges the international court of justice to prosecute Israeli leaders for “war crimes” in Gaza.

In a Friday address to an emergency Arab summit on the Gaza war, President Ahmadinejad said Israeli leaders are responsible for the death and injury of thousands of Palestinians, including women and children.

“It is most essential that Israel’s political and military leaders stand trial for the acts of genocide they have committed against Palestinians,” said the Iranian president in Doha.

Twenty-one days after the beginning of the Israeli air and ground assault on Gaza, some 1,170 Palestinians have been killed and more than 5,200 others have been injured.

He said Irao was not fulfilling its obligations and did not allocate money for the medical care of the poor, while hospitals refuse to accept the company’s policies.

Chronology: Which Side Violated the Israel-Gaza Ceasefire?

17/01/2009

Introduction

June 18, 2008

Israel has approved a ceasefire to end months of bitter clashes with the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Gaza, Israeli officials have confirmed. Under the terms of the truce, which is set to begin Thursday (June 19), Israel will ease its blockade on the Gaza Strip. At the same time, talks to release an Israeli soldier [Gilad Shalit] held by Hamas would intensify, an Israeli official said. Hamas, which controls Gaza, says it is confident that all militants will abide by the truce [by not firing rockets into southern Israel]. The agreement is supposed to last six months. (Emphasis added) (“Israel Agrees to Gaza Ceasefire,” BBC, June 18, 2008)

December 28, 2008

“The United States strongly condemns the repeated rocket and mortar attacks against Israel and holds Hamas responsible for breaking the cease-fire and for the renewal of violence in Gaza.” U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. (“White House Puts Onus on Hamas to End Escalation of Violence,” New York Times, December 28, 2008)

December 30, 2008

“Israel must defend itself. And Hamas must bear responsibility for ending a six-month cease-fire this month with a barrage of rocket attacks into Israeli territory.” (“War Over Gaza,” New York Times editorial, December 30, 2008)

Ceasefire Chronology: (See November 5 and December 28 Entries Below For Direct References to Breaking the Ceasefire)

July 4, 2008

A humanitarian crisis is engulfing Gaza-not the result of a natural disaster but entirely man-made and avoidable. The tightening of the Israeli blockade since June 2007 has left the population, 1.5 million Palestinians, trapped and with few resources. They are surviving, but only just. Some 80 per cent depend on the trickle of international aid that the Israeli government allows in.

In the first five months of 2008 some 380 Palestinians, more than a third of them unarmed civilians and including more than 60 children, were killed by the Israeli army, almost all of them in the Gaza Strip. In the same period 25 Israelis, 16 of them civilians, were killed by Palestinian armed groups.

A ceasefire between Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups came into force on 19 June and at the time of writing it looked uncertain. Israeli officials however, insisted that Gaza’s border remains sealed so long as Hamas does not release the Israeli soldier they are holding. Some 8,500 Palestinians are detained in Israeli jails. Of these, 900 are from the Gaza Strip, all of whom have been denied visits by their families since June 2007.

Palestinian armed groups in Gaza continue to hold an Israeli soldier, who was captured in June 2006, and to deny him access to the International Committee of the Red Cross. (“Gaza Blockage: Collective Punishment,” Amnesty International, July 4, 2008)

US suspends munitions delivery to Israel

17/01/2009

Ok here is how it works. There is only one thing governments are really afraid off; To loose control over its population. F*&k nice demonstrations, happy obedient groups of people going through the motions of officially allowed dissent. That’s easy, just ignore them.

It’s when the crowds get ugly, when crowds don’t walk the officially allowed routes and when they start destroying banks and other symbols of the ruling elite that governments start paying attention. First they ignore it, than they have their mass media tell us that they are just extremists and vandals and as the riots grow in size and the damage escalates the shadowy elite of those countries hit by the riots talk to the members of their shadowy elite in the countries causing the anger of the rioting plebs.

It goes like this:” Shit guys, the natives are going restless, we need a break. I know the Gazan’s need to go but let’s have a breather OK?” You wait with those transports and  let the sheeple go back to sleep and when they are getting squeezed with the credit crunch and all they think about is where the next meal is coming from you get those suckers over to Israel to finish the job.”

The boys think about it for a moment and say : “Sure thing, when do you think that’s going to be?”

The answer:” At the rate we’re going? Give it two three, months, were already shedding thousands of jobs a month so you should be sweet in say three months, OK?

The boys: Sweet no worries. You get your sheeple back in the paddock and we’ll get the Gazans in three months.”

The Pentagon has suspended the delivery of a shipload of munitions to Israel after international concern that it could be used by Israeli forces in Gaza.

The German-owned cargo vessel, Wehr Elbe, under charter by the US Military Sealift Command, is currently in Greek waters with its transponder tracking turned off to prevent its location being identified.

Amnesty International has written to the foreign secretary, David Miliband, asking him to make “urgent approaches to the US, German and Greek governments to prevent this, or any pending or future shipments of weaponry until it can be verified that they will not be transferred to the Israeli Defence Forces or other parties to the conflict in Gaza.

“We urge you to ensure that no EU member state will allow their ports or other facilities to be used to transit these or any other weapons to any of the parties to this conflict.”

Merrill Lynch says rich turning to gold bars for safety

17/01/2009

Remember that nice big bank John Key used to work for? I wonder did John Key put his money in Gold. Oh I forgot, he hasn’t got a clue what his money is doing, Yeah right.

Gary Dugan, the chief investment officer for the US bank, said there has been a remarkable change in sentiment. “People are genuinely worried about what the world is going to look like in 2009. It is amazing how many clients want physical gold, not ETFs,” he said, referring to exchange trade funds listed in London, New York, and other bourses.

“They are so worried they want a portable asset in their house. I never thought I would be getting calls from clients saying they want a box of krugerrands,” he said.

Merrill predicted that gold would soon blast through its all time-high of $1,030 an ounce, and would hit $1,150 by June.

The metal should do well whatever happens. If deflation sets in and rocks the economic system it will serve as a safe-haven, but if massive monetary stimulus gains traction and sets off inflation once again it will also come into its own as a store of value. “It’s win-win either way,” said Mr Dugan.

He added that deflation may prove the greater risk in coming months. “It’s very difficult to get the deflation psychology out of the human brain once prices start falling. People stop buying things because they think it will be cheaper if they wait.”

Merrill expects global inflation to hover near zero, with rates of minus 1pc in the industrial economies. This means that yields on AAA sovereign bonds now at 3pc will offer a real return of 4pc a year, which is stellar in this grim climate. “Don’t start selling your government bonds,” Mr Dugan said, dismissing talk of a bond bubble as misguided.

Dim outlook may worsen – Treasury

17/01/2009

The Treasury has “deep concern” about the rapid slowing in world trade and says the “downside” scenario on which the New Zealand economy is tracking could deteriorate even more.

Prime Minister John Key’s office yesterday released notes from the Treasury’s Thursday update to ministers on the international economic outlook and its forecast impact.

In summing up the “bad news” internationally since its December update, the Treasury used unusually strong language, warning of “deep slowdowns” in major economies such as the United States, Britain, Russia, China, India and Russia.

“Australia’s prospects are highly linked to Asia’s – and ours to Australia’s. The rate at which world trade has fallen away in recent months is of deep concern.”

It said there were also unprecedented commodity price drops.
