Showdown time as Clark heads to Apec
By TRACY WATKINS in Sydney – The Dominion Post | Friday, 7 September 2007Prime Minister Helen Clark arrives in Sydney today to unprecedented security and a showdown over nuclear power.
As police prepare for a big protest march tomorrow, expected to attract 20,000 people, Sydney-siders are reporting security overkill, with restaurants reportedly told not to leave cutlery on outdoor tables, office workers told not to look at passing helicopters and claims police are checking reporters’ notebooks.
Police insist there is no “official direction” for officers to use such tactics but officials are defending the level of security.
“Now if they go too far, and there is an overkill about it, as long as it doesn’t interrupt the lives of most of our citizens, I’m reasonably willing to cop that,” Deputy Premier John Watkins said.
